LASIK surgery is an elective procedure that improves vision – safely and precisely – by reshaping the cornea to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Vision improves within minutes, and most patients eventually enjoy 20/20 vision or better after treatment.
Although proven safe and effective, the most extensively used LASIK technologies have a downside associated with a variety of post-operative side effects, such as night-vision reduction, glare and halos.
Until recently, many patients seeking the benefits of a LASIK procedure also had to accept such side effects as a common result of the surgery. This is not so at Staten Island’s first and only onsite-LASIK vision-correction center: The LASIK Center of Staten Island.
The LASIK Center of Staten Island, under the direction of Dr. Ray Mostafavi, is the first and only medical facility in Staten Island, N.Y. to have in house LASIK center
In addition, the LASIK Center of Staten Island owns and utilizes the WaveLight ALLEGRETTO WAVE™.
The equipment, which represents the latest generation of groundbreaking LASIK technology, nearly eliminates the common post-surgical side-effects mentioned above.
When used by a qualified eye surgeon such as Dr. Mostafavi, the ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ surpasses older types of lasers by adjusting to the eye curvature of each individual patient.
Like earlier LASIK technologies, the ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ offers many improvements over other refractive surgery procedures. These include little or no post-operative discomfort, immediate vision improvement, and the ability to drive or return to work quickly — sometimes as soon as the next day. Most patients require no corrective eyewear after surgery (although patients over 45 often need reading glasses).
AM I A CANDIDATE?
Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK.
When you visit the LASIK Center of Staten Island for an evaluation, your eyes will be personally examined by Dr. Mostafavi to determine whether LASIK or another refractive procedure is appropriate for you, and whether you are at risk for any complications.
When assessing your eligibility as an ideal LASIK Candidate, Dr. Mostafavi will examine your eyes using a Pentacam® HR diagnostic-imaging device. The unit is one of the most sophisticated high-resolution technologies available for revealing potential, otherwise hidden, problems a potential eye-surgery candidate could face during or after a procedure.

GETTING AQUAINTED WITH THE PROCESS
During your consultation at the LASIK Center of Staten Island, Dr. Mostafavi will review your eyesight and discuss whether LASIK is right for you.
Dr. Mostafavi has extensive experience in laser-vision correction. He doesn’t pressure patients, and won’t suggest a procedure that isn’t right for them.
A board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-accredited LASIK surgeon, Dr. Mostafavi has spent over 12 years performing refractive surgery, and has personally performed over 5,000 vision-correcting procedures. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Every patient interested in LASIK is given an extensive evaluation by Dr. Mostafavi to determine whether LASIK is right for him or her. During the consultation, the patient and surgeon have a frank discussion about the advantages and risks of having laser vision correction. Only then is the patient accepted as a pre-operative LASIK candidate.
NO PRESSURE, NO RUSH
Dr. Mostafavi personally performs all LASIK procedures at the LASIK Center of Staten Island.
Unlike many high-volume LASIK “factories, where only non-surgeons attend to patients during the pre-operative post-surgical periods, Dr. Mostafavi caters to each individual patient through the entire process – from initial exams, approval and pre-operation to surgery, post-operative care, and on.
Dr. Mostafavi takes the time to ensure that every patient receives the very best care and attention within a relaxed, non-hectic atmosphere.
